Understanding Cancer

I heard an interesting interview this afternoon on the NPR radio program Here and Now. It was the first interview in a series that talks to leading cancer researchers about the work they are doing to fight cancer. This interview, with Dr. Ronald Depinho, president of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, covered advanced treatments that are allowing more patients to outlive cancer because scientists are better understanding how cancer works. Dr. Dephino’s work revolves around understanding how a cancer develops and creating individualized treatments to best fight it. As he says in the interview, “we’re now at the threshold of a time where we can begin to understand exactly what’s wrong in a person’s cancer and tailor the therapies.”
